Clinical Nutrition
The physicians at Arizona Prohealth (AZP™) have developed a unique and exclusive treatment strategy we call I.D.F.S., Identify, Detoxify, Fortify, Standby. The third part, Fortify, is all about building a strong nutritional foundation while correcting imbalances and deficiencies.
Nutrition is the foundation upon which the entire human structure is built. Good nutrition equals strength and poor nutrition equals weakness. Simple as that. Trying to build a strong body with poor nutrition is similar to building a house on a foundation of sand.
The leading nutritional problem in the United States is that people eat far too much of the foods that lack adequate nutrition, such as fast food and processed foods. We call this the Standard American Diet (SAD). Although people eat plenty of food, it is usually not the best kind of food.
Many studies have concluded that almost 2/3 of an average American’s diet is made up of bad fats and refined sugars that have minimal or no nutritional content. This contributes to nutrient deficiencies even though people are eating more than enough everyday! The SAD has been continually cited by numerous studies since the 1960’s as a contributing, causative factor in a variety of “killer diseases” including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.
Most doctors typically only recognize severe nutritional deficiencies such as beriberi (Vitamin B1), pellegra (niacin), scurvy (Vitamin C), or rickets (Vitamin D). However, our clinical experience has shown that even mild to moderate deficiencies are problematic, the symptoms of which may often be subtle, overlapping and greatly varied.
Many times the symptoms of nutritional deficiencies are mistaken as being a normal part of the aging process. However, many symptoms are actually subtle signs that can be responsive to nutrient supplementation and dietary modification.
For example, the first signs of a B vitamin deficiency can include insomnia, mood swings, depression, poor concentration and fatigue. The use of oral supplementation can be effective in many cases, however, most people respond much quicker to the use of intravenous infusion of vitamins that rapidly increase the levels of nutrients in the body.
We use a variety of lab tests to determine specific deficiencies and/or hypersensitivities and then treat according to your specific needs.
The father of medicine, Hippocrates is credited with the quote “Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food.” Those were and still are very simple yet profound words. We regularly witness numerous complex and difficult cases begin to resolve by merely supplying the body with the nutrients it so desperately needs.
Everything we put into our mouth in the form of food or drink, including drugs and supplements, results in changes in our biochemistry and physiology that will either contribute to health or disease. In today’s fast paced lifestyle laden with convenient, preserved, chemical rich food and drink, the need has never been greater to carefully examine the ultimate impact our dietary choices have upon our health.
